Twinkle, Twinkle

This lesson is focused around the tune “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” Why Twinkle Twinkle? Well there are several reasons…

  • Everyone knows this song and can probably sing it easily.
  • Since the melody is so ingrained in our heads it makes it easy to use as a tool to improve various aspects of our paying.
  • Whether you are just staring out or a seasoned player you can use this tune to improve various aspects of your playing.

What can we do with this:

  • Learn the melody. It is a basic melody that utilizes the major scale. Learn this by ear and in several keys and octaves. (video 1)
  • Using the basic melody work on your right hand technique. Playing different rhythm patterns for each note. (video 1)
  • Create variations on the basic melody.
  • For more advanced players, work on playing in all 12 keys (as close to the nut as possible). Easiest way to do this is to play around the circle of 5ths. Playing in G then C then F, etc…

Once you learn these techniques with Twinkle Twinkle you can apply them to other melodies.
