Songs that use the 3 chord…
The 3 chord is a common chord used as a passing chord between the 1 and 4 chords. The 3 chord is naturally a minor chord in the scale. For example in the key of G the 3 chord is a Bm. This use is common in rock and folk tunes such as Van Morrison’s ‘Tupelo Honey’ and The Band song ‘The Weight’. Another common use is as a dominant 7 chord. So in G it would be a B7. This use is more common in blues and bluegrass. Some tunes that use this are Elizabeth Cotton’s ‘Freight Train’, Steve Earl’s ‘I still Carry You Around’, The Dillards ‘Old Home Place’ and the traditional ‘Make me down a Pallet on Your Floor’.
